Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
